Diabetes and skin problems
For some people that have diabetes, having too much glucose in their blood
for a long time can cause serious complications including skin problems.
As many as a third of the people with diabetes will have a skin condition
related to their disease at some time in their lives. Most of the skin
conditions can be prevented and treated if they are detected early.
If the skin conditions are not caught early and taken care of properly, a
minor skin condition can turn into a serious problem with potentially
severe consequences.
Scleroderma diabeticorum is a condition that causes the thickening of the
skin on the back of the neck and the upper back. This condition is rare
but can affect people with type two diabetes. The treatment is to bring
your blood glucose level under control.
There are lotions and moisturizers that may help soften the skin. Vitiligo
is a condition that affects skin coloration. With vititligo, the special
cells that make pigment are destroyed, resulting in patches of discolored
skin. This will often affect the chest and the stomach. It can also be
found on the face around the mouth, nostrils, and eyes. This condition is
more associated with type one diabetes.
The current treatment options for vitiligo include topical steroids and
micropigmentation. You should use sunscreen with a good SPF to prevent
sunburn on the discolored skin. There are many creams and conditioners
that you can get to help your skin. You will find that these lotions will
make your skin look a lot better.
For some people, it may be a good idea to ask their physician to prescribe
a vitamin so that they can take better care of their skin. You should not
take anything unless the doctor gives the ok for it to be used with the
diabetes. You have to make sure that all the medication that you take is
in compliance with your treatments.
Diabetes is a complicated disease and it is necessary for a person to take
control of their treatment. They have to be aware of all the things that
need to be done and all the problems that can happen if it goes untreated.
