What is gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is known as glucose intolerance during pregnancy. This is some thing that a lot of pregnant women have to endure. It is caused by the hormonal changes that are occurring in their bodies. These hormones can cause a woman's body to be less sensitive to the effect of insulin. These changes can lead to high blood sugar and diabetes. High blood sugar levels in pregnancy are dangerous for both the mother and the baby.

This is something that can be dealt with and that can be taken care of. It is not unusual and is very common for a lot of pregnancies. It is still possible to have a healthy and happy baby and for the mother to be perfectly fine as well. All the woman has to do is make a few changes in her diet and things will be just fine.

Between the pregnancy weeks of twenty-four and twenty eight weeks, most every pregnant woman is screened for glucose intolerance. If there are risk factors for diabetes, the woman will be tested sooner than that.

Some of the risk factors include things like being over weight, a history of diabetes in the family, or having sugar in the urine. These are all things that would make a doctor want to screen the woman a lot sooner for the diabetes.
The woman will have to eat fifty grams of glucose and then a blood test to determine the results. If the blood sugar level is less than 130-140 it is considered to be normal and there is going to be no reason for concern. The doctors will also take a history and make sure that there are no further concerns for diabetes that they should worry about in the future.

If the blood sugar is higher they are going to probably do a few more tests to determine the problem and to see if the woman is going to need further assistance or not. This is a great test that is doing a lot of good for many women that are expecting. This is something that will ensure their health and the health of their baby.
