Stroke and diabetes

Diabetes is a dangerous disease. Another good reason for this is that it can lead to a stroke. Brain tissue needs to have a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to keep nerve cells and other parts of the tissue moving. The brain will rely on a lot of blood vessels to provide it with blood that is rich in oxygen. A stroke can occur when one of these blood vessels become damaged or blocked. This will prevent blood from reaching an area of the brain. When a part of the brain is cut off from its supply of oxygen for more than three to four minutes, it will die.

There are two forms of stroke. A rupture in the artery causes the first. This is known as a hemorrhagic stroke. Another form of stroke is those that cause a blockage of the artery also known as ischemic stroke.

High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for a stroke. This is why it is important to keep blood pressure under control when a person has diabetes. People with diabetes are at a higher risk for stroke because of the affects that it has on the arteries.

People that have diabetes who have a stroke will be worse off than those without diabetes. When the oxygen supply is cut off, other arteries can usually deliver oxygen when they are bypassing the blockage. In people with diabetes, may of the bypass arteries are also affected by impairing the blood flow to the brain. Other risk factors may be responsible for the worse outcomes following a stroke.

Death rates from strokes have decreased. It is not sure whether the death rates from stroked have decreased in the people that have diabetes or not. This is a study that is being researched more and more each day.

You can prevent the risks of stroke when you have diabetes by following the orders that your doctor recommends for you. You have to watch your diet and eat the right foods. You need to maintain a healthy lifestyle including the way that you exercise. This is important because you need to keep your health up in order to beat the odds of having a stroke and dealing with the complications of diabetes.
